Will Ferrell Stars in Old Milwaukee Beer Commercials
Commercials are undoubtedly an important part of breweries reaching their target audience. Dos Equis, for example, has the most interesting man in the world. Recently, Coors Light gave the nod to Ice Cube. There have been others including Snoop Dogg and Ludacris, and now Old Milwaukee finds itself in a similar situation tapping Will Ferrell to represent its brand.
Old Milwaukee was first brewed in 1890. An old iconic brand, similar to National Bohemian or National Premium, the beer was reintroduced in 1955 by Schlitz Brewing Company. In 1982, Schiltz was acquired by Stroh Brewery; however, more consolidation occurred and in 2000, Pabst Brewing Company purchased Stroh and the Old Milwaukee brand.
As we reported, last year Pabst Brewing Company was purchased for ~250 million by C. Dean Metropoulos. This came after the popular resurrection of Pabst Blue Ribbon from younger generations embracing the history of the beer. Now, Old Milwaukee is capturing more attention with its newest star: Will Ferrell.
Will Ferrell, the former SNL star and movie star, apparently approached the brewery to star in the ads for free. You might be asking (like we did) why in the world would he do the ads for free?
Metropoulos told AdWeek, "Will Ferrell approached Old Milwaukee about creating ads because he's a big fan of the brand. He was interested in developing something unique and we gave him the freedom to pursue his creative vision and produce these spots with a local vibe."
The ads themselves were executed by Ferrell. What is unique about the commercials are that they look like they were filmed in the lowest budget studio or a home video camera from the early 1990’s.
In one of the commercials, he says: “When I'm not too busy being a big time Hollywood phoney, I like to come out here to Davenport, sit on my favourite log and crack open an ice cold Old Milwaukee. Truth be told I've never been to Davenport... but it's something I wanna do.”
We posted some of the selected commercials below:
Who knows if these are real commercials or just Ferrell making fun of beer commercials. Either way, we’re happy to see another celebrity get in the mix with the beer industry.
Your Choice. Your Beer. Drink Up.
