Commercial Description

In the last century, British brewers made strong stouts for the Czar’s Court. They were called Imperial Stouts. Our Black Chocolate Stout, brewed once yearly for the winter season, achieves a chocolate aroma and flavor through the artful blending of six varieties of black, chocolate and roasted malts. A winter brew

I was planning on sitting on this bad boy but everytime I looked at my beer stash this one begged to be drank.

Poured into my pint glass the beer is black as night. Maybe a slight tint of brown can be seen when holding it directly in front of a lamp. A careful pour gives me about a half inch of light brown head that dissipates leaving lace rings all around the rim.

The aroma is roasted coffee beans, burnt malt, dark chocolate with maybe a hint of dark fruit from the high abv.

The flavor is a fantastic mix of rich coffee dark and milk chocolate and toasted bread. This is spot on RIS. The dry bitter coffee blended with the chocolate make for a perfect balance of flavor. The high ABV can hardly be detected at all.

Medium to full body. A touch slick for my tastes. A decent amount of carbonation.

A mighty fine RIS in my book. A sipper for sure but I wouldn't mind have a few of these on a cold Wisconsin night. Too bad it's next to impossible to get round these parts.

12oz pour into a tulip glass, It's black and viscous. I took a few moments to admire the dark tan, thick, tight 2-finger head rise up. I allowed the head to settle down to a creamy thick cap with a great amount of sticky lacing left behind... Gorgeous!

Holding it up to a light, no light makes it through the blackness and only a minimal amount of reddish highlights appear along the edges of the glass... I'll give it a 5 for appearance.

Holding the brew up to my nose, I immediately notice a sweet burnt toast aroma mingled with dark chocolate and blackened malts. Alcohol presence is low as well as mild hops rounding out the experience. Worthy of another 5 stars in my book.

Now for the moment of truth... I take a sip and admire the bitter-sweet chocolate flavors. It's immediately followed by a coffee or espresso flavor and rounds out with dark malts, a hint of vanilla and light bitter hops to balance it out and finishes with a roasted sweetness. As it warmed, the sweetness becomes more pronounced without becoming too sweet or cloying, and the background bitterness remains balanced. There is a slight alcohol presence as it warms as well, still it remains balanced but grows in complexity. Again, 5 stars.

The mouth-feel is creamy, full bodied and lightly carbonated to the point that keeps it from feeling "chewy" or greasy. It's an easy sipper considering it's high ABV. From all other aspects, I was expecting a slightly thicker mouth-feel... not much, and not disappointed, but a little more in the body. I'd give the mouth-feel a 4.8, but since it's not an option, 4.5 it is.

Overall this is a very pleasing, well balanced offering with great aroma, attractive appearance and a commendable body and viscosity that sticks to the sides of the glass. Highly recommendable!

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a Snifter glass. The bottle reads "Limited Bottling - Winter 09-10" and I sampled it on 11-4-2009.

Appearance: The color is jet black and definitely opaque. It raises a tall tan head that is thick, creamy and hangs on very well. It slowly fades down to a tight cap of foam that makes lots of splotchy lacing on the glass.

Smell: For a big 10% beer there is very little suggestion of its alcoholic strength. I get more roasted barley and grain brown sugar and molasses. Light notes of alcohol just seek into the background.

Taste/Palate: I'm hit with a big rich sweetness up front with notes caramel, brown sugar and molasses. Next comes gooey dark bitter chocolate brownies and deep roasted barley and grain notes. Solid herbal/leafy hops finishes thing of along with a gentle warming alcohol. The palate has a good full body with a slick texture and just enough carbonation to keep things from getting cloying or to syrupy.

Notes: This is a truly outstanding BIG beer. I wish I had some really good plain New York cheese cake with fresh red raspberries to pair with this wonderful beer. Well, for tonight this beer is its own dessert.

A immensely powerful black stout. The brewery's seasonal winter beer. It's aroma is roasted mocha, bitter chocolate, and roasted malt. Smooth to the palate. Rich, spicy malt with a hint of caramel. A dry slightly bitter finish. The name alone should describe it's apperance.
