Commercial Description

A tribute beer for Hunter S. Thompson. Like Hunter this beer is deep and complex. Gonzo Imperial Porter has been brewed with black, chocolate and crystal malts, and hopped with Millennium and Cascades. This is a turbo charged version of the Road Dog and at 9.5% ABV it will bite you in the ass if you don't show it the proper respect. Proceeds from the sale of Gonzo Imperial Porter will go towards building the Gonzo Memorial Fist in Aspen. The 150 foot stone column complete with a giant red fist at its summit will tower above Hunter’s Owl Farm Estate for all eternity.

    [Best served in a Snifter]

The pour was a murky pitch black with a large (2-3 finger) medium brown creamy head that had awesome retention, lasting until the end and producing some excellent clingy spotty lacing.

The aroma was nice and robust of a roasted chocolate malt, a mild resin hop and an earthy leathery yeast with notes of bitter-sweet chocolate, dark roasted coffee, molasses and a quite pronounced scent of alcohol.

The taste was bold and roasty with a sweet acidic malty flavor that had hints of molasses and chocolate at first and then having a nice bitter sweet coffee flavor take hold with a very strong alcohol presence at the end. The flavor hung on for a decently long time letting one enjoy the nice mocha coffee flavor and a nice alcohol warming sensation.

Mouthfeel was a solid medium in body with the texture being a bit oily yet a little dry towards the end with the carbonation being quite lively.

Overall a nice strong, bold and roasty brew with a good rounding of flavors and a kickin' alcohol finish.

Starts off deep brown with a nice tan head. Huge roasted malt smell in the nose. The taste is where things get a little off the beaten path. It's creamy and a bit more bitter than most porters. Some vanilla sweetness up front. Chocolate and coffee in the finish along with some wood. A hoppy bitterness lingers, too.

Overall, it's more aggressive than most porters, and it certainly works.

Fantastic beer, super thick (pours like syrup out of the bottle) with a very strong malty/smokey porter flavor. Incredible beer that I will order again and again. I think one of these a night will probably be enough however.
