I'm not sure if something like this exists, but if not it would be a great addition to the Beer Universe site. Is there a way to find out where you can find your favorite beers - at a store, a pub, etc... - in your local area or when you're traveling?
Living in Boston, I'd love to be able to find my favorite West Coast beers - like Red Nectar or Steelhead - or my favorite UK beers - like Adnams or Summer Lightning, but it's pretty much impossible to find them except by pure chance. I'd also love to try more of the beers I read about at Beer Universe, but unless I can find them, they're just names and tasting notes.
Would it be possible to contact distributors & beermakers and get lists of what beers end up where? Then create a searchable app that lets you find them? It wouldn't need to be real-time availability - just to know that the store up the street has a distributor that could get a certain beer would be great. Of course, it would be even better if you could petition a store or distributor to carry a beer in your area too.
I have no idea what the technical hurdles are involved in all that, but would anyone else want that kind of app? I also thought it would be great for wine...but beer first, please.
local hippie organic stores usually have great craft beer...
This would be really useful and is something we hope to be able to have. There is so much trouble with small brewers in different regions fighting big brewers for shelf space and distribution rights. I think the most efficient way is to check the craft beer store in your area. Most will special order if there is a particular interest. Also if you have any particular requests beer universe may be willing to contact brewery and highlight their upcoming plans to expanding distribution. If BU knows their fans like the beer im sure they can make it known the popularity. I was told by BU that the more we express our favorites the better chance we get traction on seeing that brand near us!
The truth is there are a lot of small breweries all over and they just cannot pruduce the beer on a big enough scale to ship it everywhere. The best way to try hard to find beers is either by Trade or to purchase Online. There are sites all over the world that will ship you beer.
I agree with Kaj-ii, I am a big time trader....and sometimes finding something that is new and upcoming is sure luck.
I have made tons of relationships all over the US through trading....if there is a new brewery that is a "Buzz Brewery" I usually have someone near by to snag something for me!
I travel to a few different places in the us a few times a year. One of the things I enjoy is getting back to places where a particular beer is available that I can't get at home. It adds a little specialness to the beers that they would lose if I had them at the ready all the time.
