Just yesterday a friend who recently moved to Durham told me he stumbled upon Dain's Place and described it as a "hipster bar". On first look, you might be fooled into believing this too. The trendy penny motif (if you go you'll see what I'm talking about), a friendly yet tattooed waitstaff and Dain's glorious beard might lead to these assumptions. Dig a little deeper and you'll find classifying Dain's as "that hipster bar" is a mistake. Dain's attracts a great mix of locals, undergrads and grad students. The clientèle is truly a great cross section of Durham's demographics. With a great selection of beers that seem to change monthly, Dain's is a great place for a drinker with curious pallet to explore. However, be warned! Those looking for a rowdy time fueled by cheap domestic light beers will be sorely disappointed to find the only option on the menu is Miller Lite. Fortunately, Charlie's is right next door for that crowd and those purposes. For those that decide to stay and work up an appetite, be sure to try the Dainer with a side of tots!
My favorite bar in Durham for a sporting event or on Thursday nights for "big beers". When the Duke students are in town this night can get crowded but fun. Known for their delicious pizza but give the buffalo tenders a try. When asked hot or mild, always say hot!
