Even the best brewers are often challenged by balancing a complex stout. Founders has absolutely perfected their KBS recipe. All favors are balanced in such harmony that you catch subtle nuances with each sip. Some becoming more apparent as the brew inches closer and closer to room temp. Coffee, vanilla, chocolate it is all there. Something that could never be achieved without a significant aging period. It finishes with a nice dry bourbon mouthfeel, which is not at all overwhelming, but in perfect harmony with the flavor profile.
This beer was truly a wonderful experience. I sipped on my 8oz glass for about 90 minutes and I was filled with joy up until I reached to bottom of the glass. If you ever see a KBS release in your area do whatever you can to get there. This brew is rare and worthy of the hype.
During my short time in living in TX I had grown to love Shiner Bock on those hot summer days. I visited a local establishment that somehow did not have Shiner on tap, but they recommended ZiegenBock. I am not one to shy away from something new so I tried it. To me it seems very apparent that AB was trying to make a knock-off product that would compete with Shiner. Nice try, could have been worse, just drink Shiner.
There is a note of fruity tartness that lingers behind the intense sour as it first hits your palette. The sour over-intensifies that hints of fruit and it finish big and strong. My all time favorite sour.
If you feel so inclined to consume a malt liquor, Mickey's is definitely the way to go. I have tried many different kinds and this one is by far the best. My recommendation, go with the 40 and not the grenade and just drink fast.
Leave it to New Belgium Brewery to combine two varieties I love. They use the sweetness of a Belgian using specialized yeast to spike your pattete immediately. The sweetness quickly gives way to the hoppiness of a nice IPA. Quite the unique combination, yet one I will keep coming back to. If you like beligians or IPAs this one is for you.
The peppery bite of the rye is nipped by the hoppy finish. Both flavors are fantastic and play wonderfully off of each other. A pretty unusual pairing that is executed to perfection. Sierra Nevada has done it again.
