Doh! Duff Beer Does Exist
If you’ve lived in America over the last two and a quarter decades, you’re probably familiar with a few Lisas and a couple of Barts. At the sound of the name Homer, though, only one man’s face comes to mind… And he’s bright yellow. The Simpsons is America’s longest-running sitcom, going strong on Fox since December of 1989. Brilliant writing of memorable characters has been the show’s calling card, as they reward our viewing loyalty with a certain hilarious predictability. Case in point: Duff Beer.
Homer Simpson has been in love with Duff Beer – loosely modeled on other ubiquitous one-syllable American beers of questionable quality – for as long as we can remember, and episodes are even based around brewery tours and rival companies. Recently though, a newly married (non-cartoon) couple of Beer Universe members submitted a photograph to our Facebook page of something very curious: a pair of Duff Beer bottles that they drank on their honeymoon in Barcelona, Spain!
Yes, members of the Beer Universe, there is a Duff Beer. In fact, there are a few...
Daleside Brewery in England makes an Irish-style black beer called Duff. A brewery in Hessen, Germany, also sells a beer under the name Duff that adheres to The Bavarian Purity Law of 1516 regarding traditional ingredients. The Lion Nathan Brewery in Australia was ordered to cease making and destroy all of their existing Duff Beer a few years ago after 20th Century Fox brought legal action against the company. So what Duff Beer did our loyal members drink? It appears to have been an import from Mexico!
Mexico’s intellectual property laws work very differently than America’s, and the founder of Duff de Mexico claims a right to the trademark because of his regional “brand notoriety.” Of course, using the exact label design helps to confuse the issue greatly, as does the website’s self-aware proclamation, “Si existe!” The beer was imported to Spain in 2008 and appears to be in the process of expanding to Colombia. Perhaps fulfilling Simpsons’ creator Matt Groening’s original intent for Duff Beer, our members who tasted it in Spain were rather unimpressed.
Your Choice. Your Beer. Drink Up.
