Brewing beer is not an invention of the modern age
Brewing beer has a long tradition. The first beer was brewed about 6,000 years ago in Mesopotamia. In the Middle Ages it was mainly monks who brewed beer and used it to survive the deprivations of Lent. With the Industrial Revolution the brewing process changed as well. It was only the Frenchman Louis Pasteur who discovered that there were two different types of beer. While bottom-fermented yeast sinks to the bottom at the end of the fermentation process in the beer, the top-fermented yeast is pressed upwards by the carbonic acid. Since lower temperatures are required for the brewing of bottom-fermented beer, this brewing method was the exception for a long time. Because sufficient cooling was only possible where there was enough ice in winter. This changed only with the invention of the refrigeration machine, which could not completely displace top-fermented beer until today. Still popular top-fermented beers are, for example, wheat beer, Kölsch or Berliner Weisse.
Brewing beer requires only four ingredients
The brewing of beer is not only reserved for the large breweries, but with the appropriate equipment and the necessary knowledge, it is also possible to brew beer in your own four walls. Of course, the dimensions are much smaller. While large breweries can easily produce several million hectolitres of beer per year, the amount of beer you brew yourself will probably be limited to a few litres. The technology underlying beer brewing is basically the same, however, and the list of brewing ingredients is manageable regardless of the amount of beer you want to brew. After all, if beer is brewed in accordance with the Purity Law, it always consists of only four brewed ingredients.

Brew your own beer in five steps
To brew your own beer, you need the ingredients mentioned and the equipment required for the brewing process, which you can get in the form of a practical beer brewing set, for example. The actual brewing basically only requires five steps that you have to go through.
Step 1 in brewing beer: mashing
Mashing is about mixing water and malt with each other and heating it. In this way, the sugar is released from the malt. This is necessary so that the yeast can later convert it to carbon dioxide and alcohol.
Step 2 in brewing beer: the refining
During the refining, the remaining sugar that is still in the malt is washed out and the malt and liquid are separated from each other.
Step 3 in brewing beer: hop cooking
In this step, the hops are added to the liquid. This gives the beer bitter substances and ensures the fine spicy aroma.
Step 4 in brewing beer: fermentation
In the fourth step, the yeast makes its big appearance. It is crucial for brewing beer. Because only the yeast converts the sugar contained in the liquid into carbonic acid and alcohol.
Step 5 when brewing beer: bottle aging
Even if the yeast has in principle already produced beer, it is necessary to let the so-called young beer mature for a few weeks. For this purpose it is bottled and left to stand for about two weeks.
